Pushpanjali Medhi, one of the members at the Studio, visited the Telangana Prison Department in April this year (2019). Telangana has pioneered exemplary prison reforms which are not only aimed at the welfare of the inmates but also the prison staff members. Some of the well-received reforms include Vidyadanam Yojna for imparting secondary education amongst the inmates, and the Unnati Programme which counsels repeat offenders in order to curtail recidivism. The purpose of this visit was to observe and compile the Telangana Prison’s best practices into a vision paper for the Government of Assam, suggesting achievable measures to bring about rehabilitation and reintegration of released prison inmates in Assam.
